Of all the regions of Laos, the Bolaven Plateau in Southern Laos is the most impressive destination for a lot of tourists. The friendliness of locals and the unspoiled natural beauty is the main reason that attracts tourists to this beautiful spot for the exploration.
Some features of Bolaven Plateau
With cool climate all the year round and fertile soil, Bolaven Plateau is the cradle of famous tea coffee and rubber plantations. Traveling all over the highland villages, the hospitality and friendliness of the Lao people always leave pleasant memories. Here you can have a simple meal with salted bat meat offered in the rainforest together with native people.
Another experience is at the nights of sleeping in the remote areas, you are invited to moss soup as an appetizer by the host. The taste of this Lao food is not too delicious but you almost have no opportunity to refuse to enjoy it due to the hospitality of the host.
Waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau
Bolaven has the unique natural scenery which comes from the waterfalls. Travelers will admire the gentle waterfalls carrying the thin stream flows through the high plateau, creating a romantic landscape with nearly a dozen of beautiful and charming cascades located close to each other.
In Lao language, tad means waterfall. In Southern Laos, almost all the most beautiful tads are located in Bolaven. The journey to explore the beauty of the cascades in Bolaven is a journey for experience and conquest rather than a relaxing trip. The biggest waterfall on Bolaven is Tad Nam Tok Katamtok. The most convenient way to reach this waterfall is going by motorbike. With the height of over 100 meters, Katamtok is the highest waterfall in Laos.
Other waterfalls such as tad Cham Pee, which is situated at Km 38 on the road connecting Pakse and Paksong. Lying opposite the entrance to tad Cham Pee is tad Fane and tad Nang. To get these waterfalls, we have to experience different journeys. In particular, for Tad Cham Pee, we will follow the highway while we have to go through the forest to approach Tad Katamtok. A common thing is that all these waterfalls keep a unique wild beauty that almost cannot be found out in any other places.
Tad Yuang is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Bolaven. With the height of only 40 meters, the trip to this waterfall is quite smooth. You just follow the road connecting Pakse with Paksong. When approaching Km 39, you turn right and just move a short distance to reach tad Yuang. Mainly due to the plate tectonics, a path lying on the halfway mountain is formed. This path is about 100 meters from the main face of the waterfall. This is a great site to observe Tad Yuang from a perfect angle.
