Ten companies running the delta, from speedboat day trips out of Saigon to converted rice barges that take a week to reach Phnom Penh. First, the thing that decides whether you enjoy it: how far you actually get from the coach park.
The delta you were sold and the delta you can reach
The Mekong Delta is the most oversold day trip in Vietnam. The standard version leaves Saigon by coach after breakfast, drives an hour and a half to the nearest river town, puts a hundred people through the same sequence, coconut sweets, honey tea, a short paddle down a canal in a conical hat, lunch, and drives back in the afternoon traffic. Everything in that description happens in the delta, and almost none of it is the delta. You have spent seven hours on a coach to see a demonstration.
The two things that make the difference are distance and time of day. The landscape people picture, the working canals, the orchards, the houses on stilts, the boats loaded to the waterline, starts further out, in Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Cai Be and Can Tho, which are three to four hours from the city rather than one. And the floating markets, which are the reason many people come, do their business at first light and are thinning out by mid-morning. No coach that leaves Saigon after breakfast reaches one while it is still a market. If the market matters to you, you sleep in the delta the night before, on a boat or in a homestay, or you do not see it.
That is why this list mixes three different kinds of company and says which is which. There are day-trip specialists who solve the distance problem with a fast boat instead of a coach. There are boat owners who run their own overnight vessels, from sixteen-cabin converted rice barges down to two-cabin sampans, and who are selling nights rather than hours. And there are broad tour operators and agencies who sell delta sections inside a wider Vietnam itinerary, which is exactly right if the delta is one part of a three-week trip and wrong if it is the part you came for. Work out which of the three you are buying before you compare prices, because a day trip and a three-night cruise are not competitors and the cheaper one is not the better value.

The ten, in order
1. Les Rives, Ho Chi Minh City
Les Rives operates from the IBC Building at 1A Cong Truong Me Linh in District 1 and has run since 2010. Its answer to the distance problem is the speedboat: it sells luxury day trips into the delta, plus Cu Chi, the Can Gio mangroves and the Saigon River, and it states it was the first company to run luxury Saigon River tours by speedboat. It also works in Phu Quoc and Vung Tau. The boat buys back the hours a coach wastes, which is the single best upgrade available on a one-day delta trip. The limitation is that it is still a day trip: you sleep in Saigon, you miss the dawn market, and the price sits well above the coach product it replaces.
2. Vietnam Explorer, Hanoi Partner
Vietnam Explorer works from the 25th floor at 89 Lang Ha in Dong Da, Hanoi, and names the Mekong Delta among its destinations alongside Ha Long, Sapa, Mai Chau, Phu Quoc and Hanoi. It runs daily group departures with small-group and private options behind them, and is positioned on price for budget-conscious travellers, with a stated catalogue reaching 500-plus destinations and tours from half a day to ten days and more. The limitation is what budget daily departures always cost you: larger groups, a fixed route, a guide shared among more people, and no room to linger anywhere that is not on the schedule.
3. TransMekong and Bassac Cruises, Can Tho
TransMekong is at 144 Hai Ba Trung in Can Tho and runs the Bassac fleet, the wooden cabin cruisers Bassac II and Bassac III, plus day sampans around Can Tho. Its core route runs Can Tho to Cai Be, and the day cruises go to the floating markets and Khmer pagodas. Being based in Can Tho rather than Saigon is the whole point: the boats are already where the delta gets interesting, and an overnight on board puts you on the water at the hour the market actually works. The limitation is that you have to get to Can Tho yourself, which is a long road transfer from Saigon, so a two-night cruise realistically costs you three or four days.
4. Vietnam Tour Booking, Phu Quoc Partner
Vietnam Tour Booking has its head office at 68 Tran Hung Dao Street on Phu Quoc Island and states over fifteen years in the industry. It sells land tours and cruise tours across northern, central and southern Vietnam plus Laos and Cambodia, and names Mekong river cruises as one of its specialisms alongside Ha Long cruises and tailor-made packages. It offers a money-back guarantee and 24/7 support, and its Vietnam Tour Booking profile has the rest. The limitation is breadth: this is a nationwide and Indochina seller rather than a delta house, and a money-back guarantee is only as strong as its written terms, so ask for those in full before you pay a deposit.
5. Innoviet Travel, Ho Chi Minh City
Innoviet Travel is at 64 Vo Thi Sau in District 1 and has been running since 2005. Its delta programme is built in three sizes: a small-group day trip, a two-day homestay and a three-day homestay with cycling, which is a sensible ladder because it lets you buy the extra night that changes the trip without committing to a week. It runs community projects, reusable bottles and tree planting alongside the tours. The limitation is comfort. A delta homestay night is simple by design, with basic bedding, shared arrangements and mosquitoes, so read the accommodation description carefully rather than assuming a hotel standard is hiding behind the word homestay.
6. Alotour, Hanoi Partner
Alotour sits at 24 Trang Tien in Hanoi and sells more than 80 tour packages nationwide, most of them two to five days, in group and private form. Its delta content appears as sections inside southern Vietnam itineraries, so a day on the water sits alongside city days and the wider programme of trekking, cruising and cycling that the company builds into single trips. That is the right shape when the delta is one chapter of a longer Vietnam route, and the Alotour profile explains the rest. The limitation is the obvious one: this is not a delta specialist, and the depth on offer is a taste rather than an immersion.
7. Mekong Eyes Cruises, Cai Be and Can Tho
Mekong Eyes Cruises owns and runs converted rice barges on itineraries of two to seven days. The fleet is graded by size: Mekong Eyes Explorer with sixteen cabins, Mekong Eyes Classic with fourteen, Dragon Eyes with two and Gecko Eyes with one, so the same company can put you on a small ship with other guests or on what is effectively a private boat. Routes take in Saigon, Cai Be, Can Tho and Chau Doc and continue to Phnom Penh and Phu Quoc. The limitation is the commitment: multi-night river cruising is the most expensive way to see the delta and it eats a large piece of a two-week Vietnam itinerary.
8. Victoria Mekong Cruises, Can Tho
Victoria Mekong Cruises is registered at the Victoria Can Tho Resort in Cai Khe, Can Tho, launched in late 2019 and is a joint venture between Thien Minh Group and Wendy Wu Tours. Its programme is the long one: Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, crossing the border at Chau Doc, which turns the delta from a destination into a corridor and delivers you into Cambodia at the end of it. For a traveller doing Vietnam and Cambodia in one trip, that removes a flight and a bad bus day. The limitation is that it is a cross-border product: Cambodian entry paperwork, more days, and no short Vietnam-only version.
9. Mango Cruises, Ben Tre
Mango Cruises is based in Nghia Huan hamlet, My Thanh, in the Giong Trom district of Ben Tre, holds tax code 1300661475 issued 16 May 2011 and licence 83-009/2019/TCDL-GPLHQT, and also owns the Mango Home Boutique Resort. It runs private sampans through the small canals, on routes from Ben Tre to Vinh Long and Sa Dec, Ben Tre to Can Tho and Phu Quoc, and Ben Tre to Chau Doc and Phnom Penh. Small boats reach water the cabin cruisers cannot, which is the argument for booking it. The limitation is the private model: there is no shared departure to join, so a solo traveller or a couple carries the whole boat, and everything starts in Ben Tre.
10. Sinhbalo Adventure Travel, Ho Chi Minh City
Sinhbalo Adventure Travel is a long-running delta cycling specialist based in Ho Chi Minh City, combining bicycle days with river sections, and it also runs Central Highlands trekking and Angkor programmes. Cycling is a genuinely good way to cover the delta: the land is flat, the lanes between the canals are quiet, and you stop where you want rather than where the coach park is, which is the closest most travellers get to the villages. The limitation is heat and self-selection. Delta cycling means hours in humidity with little shade, and a traveller who does not want to ride a bicycle will find most of this catalogue irrelevant.

How we put this list together
We rank on what each company publishes about itself and can be held to: a registered address, a tax code or licence number, a founding year, named vessels and cabin counts, and the routes it actually runs. On this category we also insist on one distinction being visible, whether the company owns the boat you will sleep on or sells you a place on somebody else's, because that decides who fixes a problem at ten at night on a river. A company that names its ships and their capacity is making a checkable claim. We have not travelled with any operator here, we do not sell positions, and we do not use star ratings, which on delta products mostly reflect whether the guest understood what they had booked. When this is the wrong thing to book
The delta rewards time and punishes a rushed schedule harder than anywhere else in Vietnam, because most of the day goes on getting there and back. If your trip cannot absorb that, spend the day on something else rather than on the road.
- You have one free day in Saigon and want it to count. The delta will eat seven hours of it and most of that is the highway. Pick something closer from our day trips page instead.

Questions travellers ask most
Is a one-day Mekong Delta trip from Saigon worth doing?
Only if you understand what it is. A standard coach day trip reaches the nearest river towns, about an hour and a half out, and delivers a fixed sequence of stops: coconut sweets, honey tea, a short canal paddle and lunch. It is a demonstration of the delta rather than the delta.
If one day is genuinely all you have, take a speedboat version instead of a coach. It buys back the hours that the highway would otherwise take.
Can I see a floating market on a day tour from Ho Chi Minh City?
Realistically, no. The working markets trade at first light and are winding down by mid-morning, and no coach leaving Saigon after breakfast arrives while there is still a market to see. What day tours reach is usually a much smaller riverside scene.
To see one properly you need to be in the delta the night before, either on a boat or in a homestay near Can Tho, and out on the water early.
What is the difference between a river cruise and a delta tour?
A delta tour is land-based with boat sections: you travel by road, get on the water for part of the day, and sleep in a hotel or a homestay. A river cruise is the opposite, the vessel is the accommodation and the itinerary follows the water for two to seven nights.
Cruises cost considerably more and take more days, but they put you on the river at dawn and dusk, which is when the delta is at its best. Compare them on days used, not on headline price.
When is the best time of year for the Mekong Delta?
The dry season, roughly December to April, is the easiest: less rain, better road transfers and calmer water. It is also the hottest stretch by March and April, so an early start matters more than the month does.
The wet season from May to November brings afternoon downpours and higher water, which actually helps small boats reach narrow canals. The floating fruit season is stronger in the middle of the year, so a wet-season trip is not a wasted one.
