Yes. Student volunteer clubs are listed in their own category and are not expected to hold a tour operator licence. What we need instead is how the club is organised, how guides are matched to guests, and exactly what a guest is expected to pay for.

It depends on the operator and it is the single most common source of surprise on the night. Paid tours in the USD 65 to USD 85 range normally include everything you eat as part of the ticket. Cheaper tours, and every free walking tour, work the other way: the guiding is covered and you pay at each stall as you go.

On a free tour you are also expected to cover your guide's food, entrance fees and transport for the day, which is the fair trade for unpaid guiding. Ask the question in writing before you book, because "included" and "guiding included" are two very different sentences.

Riding pillion is how a large share of Ho Chi Minh City food tours operate, because the eating is spread over several districts and walking between them is not realistic. The operators listed here that run this format do it as their core product rather than as a sideline, and licensed companies publish an operator licence number you can ask for.

That said, it is genuinely not for everyone. If heavy traffic makes you anxious, if you have a mobility or back issue, or if you are travelling with children, take a walking tour in a dense neighbourhood instead. There is no prize for being uncomfortable for four hours.

The tighter the group cap, the earlier you need to move. A tour capped at around five guests, or one running at one guide per guest, sells out days ahead in high season and there is no overflow group to put you in. Larger walking tours can often take a booking the day before.

A practical rule: fix the food tour before you fix the restaurant reservations around it. The tour has fixed departure times and limited seats, and a restaurant almost always does not.

Some operators state a policy openly. Da Nang Food Tour says it handles vegetarian and no-pork requests, and private or near-private formats such as a one guide to one guest walk have the most room to substitute a stop. Group tours on a fixed route have the least.

What no operator can do is guarantee a street kitchen against cross-contact. If a reaction would be serious rather than unpleasant, treat a group street food tour as the wrong product and book a private guide or a cooking class where you can see the ingredients.

Match the format to the city and the weather. Walking works where the interest is dense and the distances are short, which means the Hanoi Old Quarter and the Hoi An ancient town. Two wheels, whether a Vespa or a scooter, are the right answer in Ho Chi Minh City, where the good stops are spread across several districts.

A jeep or a car with a driver wins in central Vietnam and in the hot months, because the sights around Da Nang and Hue are half an hour apart and you get shade between them. A cyclo is a short novelty ride rather than a way to see a city, and it is usually one segment of a longer tour rather than the whole thing.

Often not, and this is where quoted prices stop being comparable. Hue and Hoi An both charge real money at the gate, and a tour that looks cheaper may simply have left those tickets out of the headline figure while a dearer one included them.

Ask for the total you will pay on the day, including entrance fees, parking and any boat or cable car segment. A company that runs its own tours can answer that in one message. A reseller usually cannot, which itself tells you something worth knowing.

Ask three questions before paying: what vehicle will we be in, who is the guide, and how many other guests are booked. An operator that runs the product answers all three immediately, because the vehicle is theirs and the guide is on their roster.

Other useful signals are a published international tour operator licence number, a named managing director, and a company that says it trains its own guides. None of these are guarantees, but a reseller has no reason to hold a tour operator licence, so a published number narrows the field fast.

First day, almost always. The value of a city tour is that it changes how you spend the days after it: you learn which district is worth returning to, how to cross the road, what a fair taxi fare is and where to eat without a menu in English.

The exception is a long-haul arrival late at night. A four-hour walking tour on three hours of sleep is wasted money, so put it on day two and use day one for the neighbourhood around your hotel.

Sometimes, and it is the biggest single reason two quotes for the same itinerary look nothing alike. A Hanoi to Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City route needs two internal flights, and an operator that excludes them can advertise a much lower headline figure while quietly leaving you to book the hard part.

Ask for a quote that states, line by line, which flights, trains, transfers and entrance fees are inside the price. Ask in the same message whether the flights are ticketed at booking or later, because a fare quoted three months out is not the fare you will pay in high season.

A group departure runs on fixed dates with people you have not met, on a fixed itinerary. It is the cheapest form and the least flexible, and the experience depends heavily on the group size cap. A private tour is usually the same itinerary run for your party alone with your own guide and vehicle, which costs considerably more and removes almost all the friction.

A tailor-made trip is a different job again: the itinerary is designed from scratch around what you want to do. Most companies on this list will quote all three, so state clearly which one you are asking about, or you will end up comparing a shared coach against a private car and wondering why the numbers differ.

Ask which company handles the ground arrangements in each region of your itinerary, and ask for the international tour operator licence number of whoever that is. Operators that run their own product answer without hesitation, because the guides and vehicles are theirs. An agency that subcontracts will usually say so if asked directly.

Other useful evidence is published on the site itself: offices in more than one region, a stated headcount, a business registration number and trade memberships such as PATA, USTOA or Travelife. None of these guarantees a good trip, but together they show there is a real company behind the itinerary.

For travel between roughly October and April, which is the busiest window for international visitors, three to six months ahead is sensible if you care which hotels and which cruise ship you get. Outside that window you can often book a few weeks ahead without losing much. Whenever you book, get the cancellation and date-change terms in writing before you pay a deposit, and check whether the deposit is refundable or only transferable to another date.

The guiding is free. Nobody charges you for the guide's time and there is no ticket to buy in advance. What you pay on the day is everything else: entrance fees, food, drinks and any transport the route uses.

You are also normally expected to cover the guide's share of those same costs, so their museum ticket and their lunch if you stop to eat. Budget as if it were a modest paid tour and you will not be caught out.

Where the organisation describes itself as tip-based, as the Hue club does, yes, and the tip is the point rather than a bonus. Where it is a student volunteer club, ask at the start whether tips go to the club or to the individual, because policies differ and some decline money entirely.

Bring small notes either way. Nobody in this category takes cards, and a guide cannot break a large note at the end of a walk.

It happens most often during university exam periods, at Tet and over the summer break. Ask two or three clubs at once, at least two weeks ahead, and include your dates, group size and interests in the first message.

If nothing comes back within about four days, switch to a paid half-day tour. Never build a day you cannot repeat around a volunteer who has not confirmed.

Mostly not. Most of these organisations are student volunteer clubs whose purpose is language practice and cross-cultural exchange, so the guides are enthusiastic locals rather than licensed professionals working under a tour operator licence.

That is fine for a few hours on foot in a city centre. For anything involving vehicles, boats, mountains or a tight schedule, book a licensed operator that carries insurance and a complaints process.

They usually mean the same thing: a fixed route, a fixed departure time and a large vehicle sold seat by seat. The phrase small group only means something when the operator publishes a number, as Ninh Binh Tours does at nine passengers per limousine van.

If no cap is published, assume the vehicle will be full. That affects reboarding time at every stop far more than it affects comfort on the road.

A day trip is a driving day with a few hours on the water in the middle. Dragonfly Cruise, for example, describes roughly four to six hours of cruising, which is a more honest number than a twelve hour tour length that counts the road.

If the bay is a highlight of your trip, take a cabin overnight and see it early and late, when the day boats are not there. If it is one item on a long list, the day trip is a reasonable compromise.

Because the vehicle collects from several hotels before it leaves town, and the operator cannot know in advance where you sit in that loop. A pickup window is normal on a group departure and is not a sign of a badly run tour.

A private tour removes the loop entirely, and on a long day that can be worth more than any other upgrade. Ask for the earliest pickup and the latest realistic drop-off in writing before you pay.

Often not. Day trips are widely wholesaled, so the company selling the seat, the company operating the vehicle and the guide can all be different. That is normal in Vietnam and is what makes daily departures possible at all.

It matters in two situations: when something goes wrong and you need to know who is responsible, and when the seller owns the product it is recommending. Truly Ninh Binh and Dragonfly Cruise, for instance, are sister brands at the same address, which is worth knowing before you treat a suggestion as independent.

A cruise line owns the vessel, employs the crew and holds the berth, so it is directly accountable for what happens on board. An agency owns no ships and sells cabins across many lines, usually bundling the road transfer from Hanoi and handling the booking end to end.

Book the line direct when you already know which ship you want. Use an agency when your date is fixed but the boat is not, because a line can only ever sell you its own cabins.

Yes, and the decision is not the cruise company's to make. The provincial authority and its port administration suspend departures when conditions are unsafe, which happens with tropical storms, strong winds, heavy seas and thick fog. When the port closes it closes for every vessel in it, expensive or cheap.

Plan around it rather than arguing with it. Never put the cruise on the night before an international flight, and ask in advance whether a closure gets you a refund, a credit, a new date or a substitute day trip.

It matters a lot, and companies are not always loud about it. They are neighbouring waters with different traffic levels and different departure ports, so the same headline price can buy a crowded route or a quiet one.

Indochina Junk, for example, specialises in Bai Tu Long, while Ambassador runs its Signature vessel in Lan Ha. Ask which bay, which port and how long the road transfer is, and get the answer in writing before paying.

One night gets you on the water, but a large share of that itinerary is spent travelling to and from Hanoi, and you effectively see one sunset and one sunrise. It is enough if the bay is one item on a long list.

Two nights is the upgrade most people would rather have bought than a better cabin for a single night, because it reaches water the short itineraries do not. Capella, for instance, publishes one, two and three night options on the same ship.

The general position is yes. A foreign visitor normally needs either a Vietnamese licence or a home licence together with an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, recognised or converted for use in Vietnam. A permit issued under the older 1949 convention is a different document and is commonly not accepted. The licence category also has to cover the engine size you are riding.

Travel and medical policies commonly exclude motorcycling altogether, or cover it only where the rider held a valid licence for that machine. A claim after an accident on an unlicensed ride is frequently declined, and some policies extend the same exclusion to a passenger on that bike. A medical evacuation from a mountain province is not a small bill.

Read the motorcycling wording in your own policy and ask your insurer directly if it is ambiguous. If the answer is not clearly yes, ride pillion instead.

Not as a self-drive trip. The loop has long descents, blind hairpins, loose gravel, livestock on the road and heavy trucks, and learning to ride on it is how people get hurt. Every operator on this list can seat you behind an experienced local driver instead, and you see exactly the same road.

If you want to try riding, do it on a flat, quiet route for a day first and decide afterwards. Do not make that decision on the morning of departure at the top of a pass.

September to November is the usual answer: the rain has eased, the air is clear and the rice terraces are at their best. March to May is workable and warmer, though hill haze can flatten the views. June to August brings heavy rain, landslides and closed sections.

December to February is dry but genuinely cold at altitude, with fog that can sit on the passes all day. Ride it if you have proper gear, and expect to lose viewpoints to cloud.

Yes, and ask it plainly: is the guide your employee, and are they paid the same whether or not I buy anything on the walk. A guide on a salary has no reason to route you past shops or linger where selling happens. A guide taking commission on purchases has a financial reason to do exactly that.

A good operator answers the question directly and some publish the answer. An operator that will not answer it is telling you something too.

Late February to April is burning season, when fields are cleared before planting and smoke fills the valleys. The walking is fine but the long views are often gone entirely, which matters if the mountains are why you came.

June to August is the wet season: slick clay, swollen streams and leeches on the trails and in the undergrowth. It is walkable with gaiters and the terraces are at their greenest, but expect to be wet and to be bitten.

September to November. The rain has eased, the paths dry out, the air clears and the rice is ripe and gold on the terraces, which is the scene most people have in their heads when they book.

December and January are dry and clear at lower altitude but genuinely cold above 1,500 metres, with fog that can sit all day. Bring proper layers and accept that some viewpoints will be inside cloud.

For a standard one or two day route, enough to walk five to seven hours on uneven ground with real climbs and descents. The distances are modest, the gradients are not, and wet clay descents are harder than the map suggests.

Several operators grade their routes easy, intermediate and difficult. Use the grading honestly rather than optimistically, and tell the operator about knees, ankles and asthma before you book, not on the morning.

Only if you understand what it is. A standard coach day trip reaches the nearest river towns, about an hour and a half out, and delivers a fixed sequence of stops: coconut sweets, honey tea, a short canal paddle and lunch. It is a demonstration of the delta rather than the delta.

If one day is genuinely all you have, take a speedboat version instead of a coach. It buys back the hours that the highway would otherwise take.

Realistically, no. The working markets trade at first light and are winding down by mid-morning, and no coach leaving Saigon after breakfast arrives while there is still a market to see. What day tours reach is usually a much smaller riverside scene.

To see one properly you need to be in the delta the night before, either on a boat or in a homestay near Can Tho, and out on the water early.

A delta tour is land-based with boat sections: you travel by road, get on the water for part of the day, and sleep in a hotel or a homestay. A river cruise is the opposite, the vessel is the accommodation and the itinerary follows the water for two to seven nights.

Cruises cost considerably more and take more days, but they put you on the river at dawn and dusk, which is when the delta is at its best. Compare them on days used, not on headline price.

The dry season, roughly December to April, is the easiest: less rain, better road transfers and calmer water. It is also the hottest stretch by March and April, so an early start matters more than the month does.

The wet season from May to November brings afternoon downpours and higher water, which actually helps small boats reach narrow canals. The floating fruit season is stronger in the middle of the year, so a wet-season trip is not a wasted one.

DMC stands for destination management company. It is a company based in the destination that designs and runs the ground arrangements, and its usual customer is a foreign tour operator or travel agent rather than a traveller. Several companies here say so openly.

It matters in two ways. Going direct cuts out the agent margin, but it also means you lose the financial protection and the local consumer rights that a licensed operator in your own country would carry. Get everything in writing, and pay in a way that gives you some recourse.

Some of these groups own more than the planning desk. Lux Travel DMC and Lux Cruises Group are part of the same group, so a Lux itinerary often puts guests on a Lux ship. That is normal for an integrated group and it can improve consistency on board.

It just means the vessel was not chosen from the whole market on your behalf. Ask whether the group owns the boat, hotel or lodge being proposed, and what the second choice would have been at the same price.

More than a package. The value of a designer is in securing specific rooms, specific guides and specific vehicles on specific dates, and all three get harder to hold closer to departure.

If you are inside about two weeks, you will usually get a standard itinerary with a late-booking premium attached. At that point a fixed departure or a set of separately booked day tours is better value.

Four things in writing: the registered company name, the international tour operator licence number, a named person responsible for your file, and a full itemised price that states what is excluded, especially international flights and entrance fees.

Also ask what happens if a hotel or a boat in the itinerary is substituted after you pay. A clear substitution and refund clause is the single best signal that you are dealing with a serious operator.

A dive centre is a training and safety business. It is affiliated to an agency such as PADI or BSAC, employs certified instructors, services its own cylinders and regulators, and can take you from no experience to a certification.

A boat trip operator sells a day on the water: several stops, snorkelling gear, lunch and a guide. It is cheaper because it is a different product, not because it is a discount. If you want to breathe underwater, book the dive centre.

Phu Quoc's southern reefs are usually dived from around October to April, because the south-west monsoon runs roughly May to September and puts wind and swell onto that side of the island.

Nha Trang runs on a different clock, because central Vietnam's rain arrives late in the year. The months that suit Phu Quoc best are not automatically the months that suit Nha Trang, so a trip that wants both coasts needs the dates checked for each one separately.

No. Visibility and sea state decide whether a boat goes out, not the calendar. A settled week inside the monsoon can produce a good day, and a storm in the supposed high season will cancel one.

Ask for the weather cancellation policy in writing before you pay, and if the diving or snorkelling is the reason you came, keep a spare day in the itinerary so a lost morning is not the end of it.

How many people are on the boat, what the guide to guest ratio is, whether the snorkelling stop is an actual reef, and what is included beyond the ticket price. Gear rental, national park fees and hotel transfers are the three costs most often added later.

For diving, add the agency affiliation, the instructor's certification level and the diver cap per boat. Operators that publish a cap in advance, such as an eight-diver limit, are usually the ones that keep to it.

The catalogue is built around packages of roughly two to five days, and the activities that other companies sell as standalone half-days, street food walks, riding sections, delta days, appear here as parts of a longer itinerary instead.

If a single day out is all you want, say so in your first message and ask directly whether it can be sold separately. If the answer is unclear, a day trip specialist is the cleaner booking and usually the cheaper one.

A group departure is a shared date at a lower price per person, with the pace and the running order set for everyone. A private departure runs the same itinerary for your party alone, on your dates, with room to shorten a morning or swap an activity.

Ask for both quotes before choosing. For two travellers the private premium is usually largest; for four or more it often narrows enough to be worth it purely for the flexibility.

The site states that the company works with boutique cruises and hotels, which describes the type of supplier rather than naming specific properties. That is normal for a land operator, since the beds and the cabins are bought from third parties for each departure.

Insist on the actual names in writing before you pay the balance, along with the substitution policy if a property is unavailable. Deluxe and boutique are categories, not names, and a category cannot be checked against anything.

A card payment leaves a record with a date, an amount and a merchant name, and it gives you a dispute route through your own bank. A transfer to a personal account gives you neither. That difference is real, and it is the main reason to prefer an operator that can take a card at all.

It is not a guarantee. No payment provider logo on any website should be read as a safety badge, and disputes have time limits and conditions. Treat card payment as one layer of protection on top of a written itinerary, written cancellation terms and a licence number you have actually checked.

What is included beyond those two people varies by itinerary, so get the entrance fees, meals and vehicle type listed in writing before you pay. Never assume a ticket is included because a site is on the route.
